Iraq Market News

On September 18, 2024, China Energy Construction International Group, Türkiye Bros Energy Company and Iraq Ster Group Consortium signed the EPC contract for the 125 MW photovoltaic project in Erbil, Türkiye. This is another achievement of deepening the Iraqi market after the signing of the 1 GW Latavi photovoltaic project in August this year, achieving rolling development of photovoltaic projects in Iraq.

Iraqi Electricity Minister Adel Karim recently announced that Iraq plans to sign contracts with foreign companies to develop photovoltaic projects by 2025, with a total installed capacity of nearly 6GW. Karim's Iraqi Ministry of Energy has already signed contracts with several foreign companies to build photovoltaic systems with a total installed capacity of 7.5GW.

Karim added that Iraq has signed billions of dollars in agreements with French company Total Energy and Abu Dhabi based Masdar to build seven large photovoltaic power plants in different regions of Iraq. Iraq has set a goal of installing 10 GW of renewable energy generation facilities by 2030. The data shows that Iraq has a power generation capacity of nearly 1.9GW, but the actual demand is estimated to be 30GW.

On February 22, 2023, the Iraqi central bank announced that it would allow settlement of import trade with China in Chinese yuan. The Iraqi central bank plans to purchase RMB through increasing RMB reserves or using US dollar reserves for payment settlement of private sector import trade.
