qmarket conditions

Pakistan is located in South Asia and has a diversified economic system. It is the 42nd largest economy in the world with a population of over 220 million, making it the fifth most populous country in the world with a high demand for electricity. Pakistan is rich in natural resources and has abundant solar energy resources for photovoltaic and thermal power generation. The southern part of Pakistan has a tropical climate, while the rest has a subtropical climate. The solar radiation is high, the climate is hot and dry, and there are abundant sunshine resources, with an average sunshine intensity of about 5-6/kWh per square meter. The abundant sunshine resources provide enormous potential for solar power generation, which can provide electricity to the northern mountainous areas and southwestern desert regions.

In terms of energy production and consumption, Pakistan's oil and gas resources are relatively scarce, while renewable energy resources are abundant. Pakistan's energy consumption is mainly based on oil and natural gas, with natural gas, oil, coal, and hydropower accounting for 44%, 29%, 14%, and 9% of the primary energy consumption structure, respectively. The oil and gas resources in Pakistan cannot meet the needs of economic development, and the energy supply is highly dependent on imports. At present, Pakistan's installed power generation mainly comes from fossil fuels and hydropower, and the cost of electricity generation is relatively high. In recent years, hydropower and natural gas power generation have entered a plateau period, while oil fired and nuclear power generation have developed rapidly, while wind power generation has just begun to take off. The transmission grid in Pakistan is mainly monopolized by the state-owned enterprise State Grid Corporation (NTDC).

3. It is expected that by the end of 2024, the solar energy market in Pakistan will reach 1.30 gigawatts, and is expected to reach 9.77 gigawatts in the next five years, with a compound annual growth rate of over 49.68% during the forecast period. In the medium term, favorable government policies, increasing popularity of solar photovoltaic systems, decreasing prices and installation costs of solar panels, and growing environmental concerns over the use of fossil fuels are factors driving market growth. The off grid power supply that can provide electricity to rural communities in the country through microgrids and mini grids, as well as the integration of renewable energy into power generation, transmission, and distribution systems, are expected to create opportunities for the market in the future.

Pakistan has committed to achieving a 60% share of clean energy usage and a 30% share of electric vehicle usage by 2030. Malik Amin Aslam, Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan on Climate Change, said, "We have committed to achieving a 60% share of clean energy and a 30% share of electric vehicles by 2030, and Pakistan has made commitments beyond its share on climate change

According to the report "Diversified Renewable Energy Integration and Planning Study" co authored by the World Bank, Pakistan National Transmission and Distribution Corporation, and Pakistani government agencies, fossil fuel power generation no longer has a competitive advantage in Pakistan. By 2030, it is expected that the proportion of coal power in Pakistan will decrease from the current 29% to 13%, while renewable energy power generation will grow exponentially. The federal government of Pakistan has confirmed that it will phase out over 10000 megawatts of coal-fired power plants in the next 15 years, "said Pakistan's Ajy Bonhansine." Starting from 2032, the total installed capacity of solar, wind, and hydropower can fully fill the power supply gap caused by the gradual phasing out of coal-fired power plants

Omar Ayub Khan, the Federal Minister of Energy of Pakistan, publicly stated that he will reshape the structure of Pakistan's energy industry based on the Renewable and Alternative Energy Policy (2020), further expand cooperation in the future, and attract investment through measures such as tax exemptions and bidding to comprehensively promote the development of clean energy in the country, ultimately achieving the goal of providing sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy.
