The development of human civilization is closely related to energy. Nowadays, the energy transformation under the "dual carbon" goal has pushed the new energy industry to the forefront, giving rise to market opportunities worth billions of yuan. Relying on a strong foundation of digital economy and new energy industry, Shenzhen actively seizes the opportunities of the times and proposes to build a global digital energy pioneer city. In the future, Shenzhen should fully leverage its advantages in industry, technology, capital, talent, and services, and promote the integrated development of the digital economy and new energy industry through "one center, one hub, two regions, and two districts". It should build a digital energy industry ecosystem and play a greater role in the new round of energy revolution.

Seizing the "dual carbon" trend, Shenzhen's digital energy industry has performed outstandingly

Millions of billion level air vents urgently require support from the digital energy industry

The "dual carbon" goal is a major strategic decision made by China based on its responsibility to promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind. Promoting clean and low-carbon energy transformation is the fundamental way to achieve the "dual carbon" goal. The Global Energy Internet Cooperation and Development Organization predicts that by 2060, the cumulative investment in China's energy system will reach 122 trillion yuan, driving the overall investment scale of the whole society to exceed 410 trillion yuan and creating about 1100 trillion yuan in social welfare.

Building a new type of power system with new energy as the main body is the main measure to promote energy transformation. The new power system emphasizes more on the coordination of "source network load storage", with new energy on the power supply side becoming the mainstay. The flexibility and intelligence level of the power grid side continue to improve, and the user side and the power system interact flexibly. The energy storage side fully guarantees the operation of the power system. The realization of these goals requires the empowerment of digital technologies such as "cloud and big things move along the smart chain" (cloud computing, big data, Internet of Things, mobile Internet, artificial intelligence, blockchain, edge computing and other advanced digital science and technology), as well as the support of many digital energy infrastructures such as ultra-high voltage, energy storage, and electric transportation.

Shenzhen has a solid foundation in the digital economy and new energy industry

Shenzhen has been deeply cultivating in the fields of digital economy and new energy for many years, with over 58000 enterprises related to digital energy in the city, possessing a strong industrial foundation to build a global digital energy pioneer city.

(1) The booming development of the digital economy industry

Since the 1990s, electronic information has been a major focus of Shenzhen's industrial development, constantly giving birth to new industries, models, and formats. Shenzhen has also become a global hub for the digital economy industry.

In 2021, the electronic information manufacturing industry in Shenzhen accounted for nearly 60% of the city's industrial added value. In 2022, the software business revenue ranked second in large and medium-sized cities nationwide, and the software business export ranked first in large and medium-sized cities nationwide. Shenzhen has internationally renowned digital economy enterprises such as Huawei, ZTE, Tencent, BYD, DJI, and Ping An Technology. With the rapid development of the digital economy, industries such as 5G, industrial internet, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and big data are also continuously growing and expanding.

In 2021, the added value of Shenzhen's core digital economy industry exceeded 900 billion yuan, accounting for 30.5% of the city's GDP, and ranking first in scale and quality among large and medium-sized cities in China. According to the "2022 Top 100 Digital Economy City Development Rankings" released by the China Institute of Electronic Information Industry Development, Shenzhen ranks third in the country.

(2) The new energy industry continues to grow

Shenzhen is one of the earliest cities in China to layout the new energy industry. In 2009, the Shenzhen New Energy Industry Revitalization and Development Plan (2009-2015) was formulated, focusing on supporting the development of industries such as solar energy, nuclear energy, wind energy, biomass energy, energy storage power stations, and new energy vehicles. Nowadays, Shenzhen has grown into a global highland for the new energy industry, with the energy storage and new energy vehicle industries being particularly prominent. On June 19th, the Hurun Research Institute released the "2023 Hurun China New Energy Industry Agglomeration City List", and Shenzhen was named the city with the highest agglomeration degree of China's new energy industry.

There are 6988 energy storage enterprises in Shenzhen, which have formed a complete energy storage industry chain covering raw materials, components, process equipment, battery modules, battery management systems, energy management systems, inverters, system integration, construction and operation, market services, battery recycling and comprehensive utilization, and other links. The installed capacity of power battery enterprises in the city is nearly 80GWh, accounting for about 27% of the national market share, and portable energy storage accounts for two-thirds of the national market share. In February 2023, the Shenzhen Development and Reform Commission issued several measures to support the accelerated development of the electrochemical energy storage industry in Shenzhen, proposing to build a world-class new energy storage industry center.

Shenzhen has formed the world's most complete new energy vehicle industry chain, led by BYD. Under the trend of intelligent, networked, and electrified development of new energy vehicles, Shenzhen has comprehensively promoted the development of the intelligent connected vehicle ecosystem based on its first mover advantage, and has become an important research and development, testing, and manufacturing center for intelligent connected vehicles and key components in China and even globally.

Shenzhen's digital energy industry has shown outstanding performance

The International Digital Energy Exhibition showcases numerous highlights. The 2023 International Digital Energy Exhibition held in Shenzhen from June 29th to July 2nd this year fully showcased new technologies, products, models, and formats of digital energy. Local enterprises in Shenzhen, such as Southern Power Grid Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau, Huawei Digital Energy, Tencent, and Xinwangda, showcased new products, platforms, and solutions, launching the new brand of "Super Fast Charging City" in Shenzhen with a cup of coffee and full power. They also established a new energy storage industry fund with a total scale of over 20 billion yuan, sounding the horn for Shenzhen to build a global digital energy pioneer city.

The new three types of foreign trade are strengthening against the trend. Electric passenger vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and solar cells have become the "new three types" driving Shenzhen's foreign trade exports. From April to May this year, Shenzhen exported electric passenger vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and solar cells, totaling 13.02 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 29.7%. Among them, the export of electric passenger vehicles reached 1.92 billion yuan, a 5-fold increase; The export of lithium-ion batteries reached 10.67 billion yuan, an increase of 14.4%; The export of solar cells reached 430 million yuan, an increase of 7.4%.
