According to China Customs data, China's import of integrated circuits (IC) exceeded US $312 billion in 2018, a year-on-year increase of nearly 20%. China's domestic IC self-sufficiency rate is less than 30%. Trade disputes between China and the United States and sanctions against semiconductor enterprises further highlight the importance of IC industry chain localization.

Silicon wafer is the main raw material for IC production. The major suppliers of large-size silicon wafers are shinyue, sumco, universal wafer, sitronic of Germany, SK sitron of Korea, etc. Affected by the current downturn in the global semiconductor industry, the global silicon wafer shipment has declined. According to semi data, in the second quarter of 2019, the total global silicon wafer shipment area was 2.98 billion square inches, a year-on-year decrease of 5.6%.

China's large silicon wafer will develop rapidly in 2019. Shanghai Xinsheng 12 inch silicon wafer has passed the certification of SMIC and Huali. In June 2019, the first batch of 8-inch polished wafers for SMIC wafers will come off the production line, and it is expected to achieve mass production of 8-inch silicon wafers in the fourth quarter. Yixing 8-inch factory in central will be put into production in July 2019, and 12 inch silicon wafer will be constructed in the second half of 2019. In addition, Hejing, jinruihong, Chaosi, Jiaxing Zhongjing, yisiwei and Youyan are also advancing. However, due to the long certification cycle and high technical barriers, the development of large silicon wafer in China is still facing challenges.

The second China semiconductor silicon forum 2019 will be held from November 19 to 20, 2019.
